The last dedicated interceptor, the last of the "Century Series" and not surprisingly rescued from the scrap heap in the 80's and converted to drones.
I say not surprisingly because the "6" was originally designed to be controlled by a "data link" connection to the ground based SAGE System.
But as one who was involved in hundreds of interceptions with the Darts based across the field from us in Duluth, as well as others in Kincheloe and Selfridge I only recall one time when we utilized the system just to see what would happen.
But compared to the others in our arsenal at the time, the ANG's 89J's which we used to call the "lead sleds", the 101's and the 102's and a visiting 104 it certainly all things considered did the job much quicker and better than the rest.
For this reason we decided to add this design to our Air Force Greatest Hits series to recognize all the dedicated people involved in producing this masterpiece, the maintenance people who it flew quickly and safely to accomplish it's mission, the armament folks who made sure that the mission would be accomplished and the pilots who's skill and courage was second to none.
