ANAMBRA STATE (LIGHT OF THE NATION)
Anambra is a state located in southeastern Nigeria; the capital of the state is Awka which is famous for its legendary blacksmithery. According to oral tradition, the title ‘Anambra’ is an anglicized version of the original title ‘Oma Mbala’ which is the native name of the Anambra River which flows through the area being a tributary of the Niger River. For a convenient pronunciation for the British colonial masters, the name derived from the Omambala River, a tributary of the majestic River Niger, it is known for its great myths, giant strides, creative, hardworking and innovative people. Its history is as mythical as its great people, as there are diverse perspectives to the origin of Ndi Anambra.
Their existence dates as far back as 4500BC, as confirmed by archeological findings unearthed in various locations in the state, including Igbo Ukwu, Aguleri, Awka, Ezira and Nri. Old Anambra State was first created in 1976 from the East Central State, on August 27th 1991, the Old Anambra was divided into two states; present Anambra and Enugu States.
