There were an estimated 12 million wild Radiated Tortoises in the year 2000. Now the population is estimated to be as low as 3 million. The tortoise only remains because of a long-standing "fady" or taboo among the Antrandroy and Mahafaly people of southern Madagascar that has helped protect this species. People outside of the region don't share the same beliefs and are the primary culprits of trafficking for this species. This decline happened to the Passenger Pigeon and Carolina Parakeet until their extinction. We can't allow the same fate for the radiated tortoise!

AZA’s SAFE radiated tortoise program is helping care for thousands of tortoises intercepted from the illegal trade, developing plans to reintroduce confiscated animals successfully back into the wild, and working closely with communities to maintain and strengthen their local protections for this beautiful tortoise.
