Design story: I made this because I realised that though its very easy to condemn the black man, any wayward or distasteful traits they might seem to have is simply the product of a society that will not nurture them, acknowledge them or champion them. Any negative cycle among the lives of black men is coming from a failure to address historic and systemic socioeconomic oppression. If the problem is narratives, pictures, words and self-fulling prophecies, then I MUST NOT be part of the problem as a black woman. I have to speak something different about them, because my son will always come out a black man. And the more I look, the more I see that there are barrier breakers and trail blazers among black men, in whatever arena; not just sport and entertainment but law, medicine, science, politics, art, you name it.
