Hāloa is planted in the ʻāina. Shortly after, the very first kalo is born. The shape of the leaves take the form of an ʻiewe and float and quiver high above the soil. They could have taken any form, but I think our Kūpuna shaped it in resemblance of an ʻiewe so that we would be constantly reminded of our genealogy and connection to Hoʻohōkūkalani.
