Odin's power was incredible, he was respected by all the gods and could see everything except the future. So he became obsessed with the idea, he went after the giant Mimir who was guarding the source of wisdom and he gave him his left eye in exchange for that power. Odin's desire for the wisdom of the knowledge of the future was so great that he agreed, gouged out his eye and threw it into the fountain. He immediately had visions about the future, but he wanted to know everything about the universe and he realized that for this he needed to do a greater sacrifice. So he took his spear and buried it in his side and hung on the Tree of Life for 9 days and nine nights and that was when he had the vision of the Runes and obtained the infinite power and wisdom.
